Job of the Week: Director of Benefits

This week, MSU Human Resources is excited to feature an opening within our Executive Management team, the Director of Benefits (posting 818366). MSU Human Resources supports university strategic imperatives by anticipating and meeting the needs of a changing community through high-quality, innovative services designed to advance student success and cutting-edge research. The Benefits team within HR administers the extensive employee benefits package at MSU.

The Director of Benefits will join a dynamic leadership team committed to collaboration, inclusion, excellence, transformation, and care. The University’s biggest investment and most important asset is the exceptionally talented faculty and staff at the core of the Spartan community. MSU Human Resources is at the heart of it, providing strategic people solutions for the MSU community.

The Director of Benefits supervises the Assistant Director of Benefits, Retirement Program Manager, and Benefits Accounting and Budgeting Manager and will provide leadership over policies, activities, and strategic planning for student, retiree and employee benefits. They will partner with key campus stakeholders and coalitions to help provide cost-effective benefits coverage while enhancing access and wellness opportunities. HR’s future Director of Benefits is a strong team leader committed to diversity, equity, and inclusion, with a bachelor’s degree, preferably an advanced degree, in business or a related field. Their work knowledge and work experience should include benefits management, federal, state, and local regulations and compliance requirements related to benefits administration. They also need strong analytical and problem-solving skills, technical database aptitude, and the ability to interpret and communicate data.

With MSU’s Benefit Open Enrollment period rapidly approaching (October 1–31, 2022), we put together this helpful list of events to ensure you don’t miss a thing. Mark your calendars, get answers to your questions and sign up for your 2023 benefits this October.

MSU Benefits Fair

The MSU Benefits Fair will be in-person this year. If you have questions about your benefits options for the 2023 plan year, consider visiting the fair and speaking with benefits providers as well as MSU Human Resources staff. Get answers to all your benefits-related questions, enroll in your benefits on-site, and even get a flu shot (by appointment only)!

When:

  • Wednesday, October 19 from Noon to 7:00 p.m.

Where:

The MSU Benefits Fair will be held at the Breslin Student Events Center Concourse. Fair attendees should use Parking Lot 63.

In-Person HR Site Labs

Take advantage of two separate in-person HR Site Labs in October. MSU HR staff will be available to answer questions and help you enroll in your benefits.

Note for MSU Retirees: a Humana representative will also be available at the HR Site Labs to answer any questions specific to your benefits.

When:

  • Thursday, October 6 from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
  • Monday, October 31 from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Where:

HR Site Labs will be held in Room 125 of the HR building.

Happy Cow Appreciation Day!

It’s Cow Appreciation Day! To celebrate these four-legged friends, take the family to the MSU Dairy Store for a tasty treat or visit the Dairy Cattle Teaching and Research Center south of campus to say hello and share your appreciation in person! 

The MSU Dairy Store sales support the teaching, research and outreach mission of the Dairy Foods Complex, where students interested in a career in the dairy foods industry have access to current equipment, technology and training. MSU’s research aids scientists in addressing food safety and processing issues.

The dairy store serves a wide variety of ice cream flavors that change daily. Through the month of July, they are serving a specialty cotton candy ice cream sundae topped with pop rocks, cotton candy and an MSU Bakery cupcake. For those who like their dairy on the savory side, the dairy store also sells cheese by the block or in gift boxes. 

The MSU Dairy Store summer hours are Wednesday through Sunday from 12 p.m. to 9 p.m. To learn more about the MSU Dairy Store, click here.

For a fun outdoor family activity this summer, visit the Dairy Cattle Teaching and Research Center, located on the university farms immediately south of MSU campus at 4075 N. College Road, between Forest and Jolly Roads. Visitors are welcome at the farm during daylight hours and can visit any animals accessible from outside or with open doors. The Michigan State University dairy herd is maintained for teaching, extension, and research purposes. Learning experiences are provided for classes in both Animal Science and Veterinary Medicine.

Job of the Week: Mail Processor III

This week’s featured job from MSU Human Resources is a Clerical Technical Mail Processor position (posting 755612) in the department of Mail Services for University Procurement and Logistics.

The selected candidate will coordinate and participate in preparation, sorting, and metering of outgoing domestic and international mail. Job responsibilities include, but are not limited to, maintaining postage permits and mail discounts, controlling records, preparing reports, and supervising student employees. This support staff position must exhibit the spirit of teamwork and flexibility, adapt to new processes and technology in reasonable timeframes, and be able to identify and sort mail based on a variety of factors. Applicants interested in this role must have knowledge normally acquired through a high school education and one to three years of related work experience in mail regulations and/or post office procedures. An equivalent combination of education and experience will also be considered. The job also requires applicants to be able to lift boxes and other equipment of up to 75 pounds. The desired qualifications for this position include experience working with USPS postal rates, mail regulations, and Quadient mail equipment. Customer service and knowledge of the university community are also taken into consideration.
